Last year, 42 m long and 10 m wide steel-wooden structure of an airships was built in Prague - Holesovice and its name is Gulliver. It hovers over the inner courtyard of the DOX - Centre for Contemporary Art. We finally had a time to go to see it. Absolutely precise airship is breathtaking. Don´t miss it.
Leos Valka, Director of DOX gallery, said that the idea was to create a "parasitic" structure over a modern glass-concrete building, which will be in a contrast to the architecture of the gallery. Originally the idea was to create something organic, at the end the airship was built. Over two years, architects Martin Rajnis and David Kubik worked together with experts on wood and steel structures to finallize the design of the airship.
The process of construction was following: the entire structure of the airship has been divided into sub-parts that were manufactured and then assembled as prefabricates. At the construction site were then fitted and connected without further modifications. Many elements were produced manually.
The airship was placed over the gallery buildings and it is 42 meters long, 10 meters wide. Inside the airship body there is a space for visitors with limited capacity of 120 people. The gondola could be accessed by ladders from the inside of the airship. An access is available all year round.
