As the name "From the pagan solstice to Christian Christmas Sun and Native Scenes in Bethlehem Chapel" suggests, the Christmas exhibiton is not only presenting the Nativity Scenes.

The first part of the exhibition takes you back to the days when the winter solstice was celebrated. You will learn how in ancient times, people were able to determine the date of the winter solstice, a great holiday of the Sun. The Sun had finally shorten its journey across the sky and the time of a day light began to be longer again. The winter solstice is connected with many habits and you can realize that some of them are in slightly different forms hold today.

The Nativity Scenes without pagan prototypes are presented in the second part of the exhibition. There are also presented various traditional crafts of the ancient Celts, Germans and Slavs. You watch carvers and lace makers working.

Lots of beautiful Nativity Scenes of various sizes, from a variety of materials and from different parts of the world are presented at the exhibition by the Church of Our Lady of the Snows on Jungmann Square. The exhibition has been organized for sixteen years and shows the current making of the Nativity Scenes as well as the historical ones.

The most famous Nativity Scene is the mechanical one made by Jiří Votruba, which is now 4.5 meters long. Furthermore, you can see the biggest Nativity Scene in Prague which is inspired by Třešť Nativity Scene, historical figures are made by Boudný and its dimensions are 3x2,5m.

Both exhibitions are close to each other, so you can visit them in one afternoon. We then continue to the Old Town Square to look at the Christmas tree. Visiting the Nativity Scenes is a must for us during the Christmas time.
