Grand Etang lake

We left the car at a small parking place, about half a kilometer from the lake. Although the forecast was threatened by rain, the sun was extremely hot. We reached a crossroad, where one path led down to the lake, the other to the viewpoint. We decided to see the lake first. In a while the Grand Etang appeared in all its beauty. Surrounding rock walls reflected on its surface and it was simply splendid.

Lake shore

Ten decades ago, the water in the Piton de Neiges Massif drained a deep valley and the river was named Bras d'Annette. After the eruption of the Piton de Fournaise volcano, the lava stamped and blocked the entire valley and the river. Over time, a lake was formed and the erosion created a flat bottom with pebbles, sand and mud. At an altitude of 500 meters, it was also filled with slightly mineralized water.

The lake can be walked around and you can see it from different places. About halfway through, you will also find waterfalls that fall down from the rock walls. The tour should take about 3 hours. However, the amount of water in the Grand Etang often varies with the weather. We were unlucky that the day before our visit was raining, and the way around the lake was flooded, so we only got to the shore and could watch only the orange fishes.

Instead of a tour around the lake, we climbed to the viewpoint. Better view, however, prevented the tremendous fern. But we saw waterfalls that we did not see from the shore.

Grand Etang viewpoint

Grand Etang is another beautiful place in Reunion, which is worth a visit and even with children. I will never forget that silence, it is really a peaceful place.
